Getting around Exuma

One main road, numbered taxis, rental cars, a bridge to Little Exuma and water taxis for everything across the harbour.

Great Exuma is long and thin, and almost everything sits on or just off the Queen's Highway, which runs the length of the island from Barraterre in the north to Williams Town on Little Exuma in the south. There is no railway and only a limited bus service, so most visitors rent a car and most residents drive.

Driving

Driving is on the left, as in the United Kingdom, although many rental cars are left-hand drive imports from the United States. The Queen's Highway is paved but narrow in places, with potholes after heavy rain and the occasional goat, so take it slowly, especially at night. Fuel stations are few and concentrated around George Town and the airport, so fill up when you pass one. A visitor can drive on a valid home licence for a short stay.

Renting a car

Several local companies rent cars, usually older but perfectly serviceable vehicles. Book ahead, particularly from December to April and around Regatta week, when the whole fleet can be spoken for. Ask whether the car can be delivered to the airport or your rental, and check the fuel policy. Scooters and golf carts are rare on Great Exuma, but golf carts are the usual transport on Stocking Island and in the cays.

Taxis

Taxis on Exuma are independently run and known by their numbers. They meet flights at the airport and can be booked by phone or WhatsApp for airport runs, restaurant nights and day trips. There are no meters, so confirm the fare before you get in. Several drivers also offer island tours by arrangement.

Little Exuma

Little Exuma is joined to Great Exuma by a short bridge at The Ferry, so it is an easy drive south from George Town. Williams Town, Tropic of Cancer Beach and a handful of restaurants are down there, and the road ends not long after.

Across the water

Stocking Island, Chat 'N' Chill and the boats anchored in Elizabeth Harbour are reached by water taxi from George Town. See the Stocking Island guide for how that works. Boat rentals and guided tours cover the cays further afield.
